NYC Foie Gras Ban will Hurt Upstate Farms, Economy

Once again, policy makers in New York City are passing laws that impose their values by limiting the choices individuals will be allowed to make; specifically, what we can or cannot choose to eat.

The New York City Council has just passed a law banning the sale of foie gras in the city. The real impact of this ban will be borne by the 350 workers on farms in upstate New York and the farm families that operate these farm businesses. The three-year phase-in for the ban will be little help for farmers in the Catskills who have built their businesses around providing foie gras for the New York City market. These farm businesses will need to transition to entirely different commodities and build all new markets, if they survive at all.
